Privacy
We are committed to protecting your privacy and handling your personal information in accordance with the Privacy Act 2020.
Purpose
The purpose of this privacy policy is to explain how and when we collect personal information, how we use, store and disclose it, and your rights in relation to the personal information we hold about you.
Collection of personal information
You can browse our website without directly providing personal information to us.
We may collect personal information when you contact or interact with us through our website or other channels. This may include:
website enquiry and quote forms
telephone, email or direct enquiries
Facebook and Instagram lead forms
social media platforms
online advertising
other digital enquiry channels
communications with us in connection with an enquiry, quote, job or service.
The information we collect will depend on how you interact with us and may include your name, contact details, address or location, details about the plumbing or other services you are interested in, and other information you choose to provide.
Please avoid providing sensitive personal information unless it is reasonably necessary for us to assist with your enquiry or provide the requested service.
Enquiries through third-party platforms
If you submit an enquiry through a third-party platform such as Facebook or Instagram, your information may initially be collected and processed by the operator of that platform, such as Meta, in accordance with its own privacy terms and policies, before being provided to Peter Jackson Plumbing.
Third-party platforms may operate or process information outside New Zealand. Their handling of your information is also subject to their own privacy policies and terms.
Once Peter Jackson Plumbing receives your personal information, we will handle it in accordance with this privacy policy and our obligations under the Privacy Act 2020.
How we use your personal information
We may use personal information we collect to:
respond to your enquiry or request for information
contact you about the specific service you have enquired about
discuss your requirements
provide or arrange quotes or estimates
arrange site visits, appointments or services
follow up on your enquiry
provide services you have requested
communicate with you in relation to work we are undertaking or have undertaken for you
improve our website, services and customer experience
meet our legal, regulatory and business obligations
send you occasional information about our services where this is permitted by law and appropriate in the circumstances.
We will generally only use personal information for the purposes for which it was collected, or for a directly related purpose, unless you have authorised another use or the Privacy Act otherwise permits it. This reflects IPP 10's restrictions on using information for purposes other than those for which it was obtained.
Storage and security of personal information
We take reasonable steps to protect the personal information we hold against loss, unauthorised access, use, modification, disclosure or other misuse.
Personal information may be accessible to our employees, contractors, service providers and website or technology providers where this is reasonably necessary for them to perform services for us.
Where third-party service providers are used to store or process information, we take reasonable steps appropriate to the circumstances to ensure personal information is handled securely and in accordance with applicable privacy requirements.
These provisions reflect the Privacy Act requirement to use reasonable security safeguards and to take reasonable steps to prevent unauthorised use or disclosure where information is provided to a service provider.
How long we keep personal information
We retain personal information only for as long as it is reasonably required for the purposes for which it was collected, or as necessary to meet our legal, accounting, operational or record-keeping obligations.
When personal information is no longer required for a lawful purpose, we will take reasonable steps to securely delete, destroy or anonymise it.
This replaces the existing “held indefinitely” wording and aligns much more closely with IPP 9, which expressly provides that personal information must not be retained longer than required for the purposes for which it may lawfully be used.
Disclosure of personal information
We do not sell personal information.
We may disclose personal information where reasonably necessary to provide our services or operate our business, including to contractors and service providers who assist us with areas such as website services, technology, communications or business administration.
We may also disclose personal information where:
you have authorised us to do so
disclosure is necessary for a purpose connected with the reason the information was collected
disclosure is required or permitted by law
it is necessary to prevent or lessen a serious threat to someone's health or safety
it is otherwise permitted under the Privacy Act 2020.
Where personal information is disclosed to an organisation outside New Zealand, we will comply with the requirements of the Privacy Act 2020 relating to overseas disclosure.
That last sentence is useful because IPP 12, introduced with the 2020 Act, contains specific requirements around disclosure to overseas organisations and comparable privacy safeguards.
Statistical information and cookies
We may collect statistical information about visits to our website to help us understand how the website is being used and improve our website and services.
This information may include:
search terms used
pages visited and links clicked
date and time of visits
the website or source from which you arrived
device and operating system information
browser type
screen resolution and browser language settings
other technical information about use of the website.
This information may be viewed and analysed by us and our website or technology providers.
Cookies
Our website may use cookies and similar technologies to help the website function, understand website usage and improve our online services.
Depending on the services and technologies used on the website, cookies may also be set by third-party services.
You can control or disable cookies through your browser settings. Some website functionality may be affected if cookies are disabled.
Accessing and correcting your personal information
Under the Privacy Act 2020, you have the right to request access to personal information we hold about you and to ask us to correct that information if you believe it is inaccurate, incomplete or misleading.
If we do not make a correction you request, you may also ask us to attach a statement of the correction sought to the information.
To request access to or correction of your personal information, please contact us using the contact details on this website.
Privacy breaches
If a privacy breach occurs that has caused, or is likely to cause, serious harm, we will comply with our obligations under the Privacy Act 2020, including notifying the Office of the Privacy Commissioner and affected individuals where required.
This wasn't in the old policy, but I would add it. Notifiable privacy breaches are an important obligation introduced under the 2020 regime. The Privacy Commissioner says notification should occur as soon as practicable and expects notification ideally within 72 hours once an organisation becomes aware that a breach is notifiable.
Privacy enquiries and complaints
If you have a question or concern about how we have handled your personal information, or wish to make a privacy complaint, please contact us using the contact details on this website.
We will consider and respond to privacy concerns in accordance with our obligations under the Privacy Act 2020.
